Bat Trang, a small village in the north of Vietnam, is about 13 kilometers south east of Hanoi center, on the other side of Chuong Duong bridge. Why is its name popular to most tourists to northern Vietnam? The answer is its ever famous ceramic and pottery products of high quality. If you have known about Vietnam, you may not be surprised that Bat Trang?s vases, bowls, dishes, and many other kinds of ceramic products have been exported worldwide. Should you would like to contemplate workers making ceramic products by hand, just come here! What?s more, you can also try it yourself!

History. Bat Trang village is said to be established in 14th or 15th century in several documents. However, according to the villagers, the village perhaps appeared earlier. There are always two stories concerning the village origin. One of these tells that under Ly dynasty, in 1100, when the nation was in its independence and initial growth period, there were 3 scholars who came back from their mission trip to China bringing the ceramic craft industry learned there back to Vietnam and taught the people of Bat Trang. In the other story, in the village history dates back to the 10th century, when King Ly Cong Uan relocated the capital in Thang Long. With the establishment and development of the capital, many businessmen, crafters from many areas come to settle down here to work and trade. In Bat Trang, there was a lot of white clay, so that many potters, among whom was Nguyen Ninh Trang family, came and built the kilns here. Accordingly, Bat Trang has gradually changed from a normal ceramic and pottery village into a famous ceramic and pottery centre until now.

As time went by, the village?s products have developed and become well known for the best quality, style and glaze, both inside and outside of the nation. Many of these are now customized for aristocratic families and religious needs. Its popular foreign markets are Japan (under the brand "Kochi (Giao Chi) ware"), the Netherlands, Britain, Portugal, Southeast Asia, etc.,

The famous ceramic & pottery products

Production Process. To produce a complete product, one must follow 3 steps. The first step is making the product frame. The artists select the suitable clay, treat it and start making a raw product. It must be repaired to get the best appearance. Secondly, they decorate and cover it with glazes. Last but not least, the raw products are baked in 3 days and 3 nights. There are several kinds of kiln, yet the temperature must be at 12000 or 13000. After baking, products are brought out, classified and repaired in case there are mistakes. And now we have the perfect product.

Popular product types. Bat Trang products are divided into 3 kinds based on the purpose of use.

Decorating the product

The special trait is the diversified decorations on the products. Thanks to a long?lasting history and development, the village?s works have been accumulated with a lot of different special designs. One more thing that makes them distinguished is the glaze, which is of high quality and a variety of colors, such as blue, brown, white, moss green, in both breaking and melting glazes.

In fact, there have appeared a number of competitors both domestically and internationally who take advantages of high technology. Yet most customers prefer the craft products that contain historical and traditional values. Hence, it is no surprise at all that Bat Trang is still found in busy days and works. More importantly, the village is now so popular that absorbs a huge annual number of tourists to visit and buy ceramic goods.

One of the most famish artist in the line of Danish pottery is probably Bjorn Wiinblad. He is known worldwide and has enjoyed a career that has spanned more than 60 years. His talents aren't limited to pottery and ceramics however; his art has been displayed on book covers, glass, and a myriad of other creative mediums. His artistic creativity in addition to his versatility combined makes him rather impossible to classify. He is much like a jack-of-all-trades within the artistic community and yet remains wildly popular.

Danish pottery, like Bjorn Wiinblad has many facets. Much of the pottery of Denmark matches the modernistic flare of the furniture that is created here as well. The furniture, the art, they all form a symbiotic relationship within the home and most artists of the area are designing their wares for the local buying public. Not that they don't welcome tourists, but most tourists offer a one-time purchase. The local public is the bread and butter for these people and they are well aware of it. It only makes sense that their designs would reflect the local culture and the idea that less is indeed sometimes more.

Quirky Danish designer, Bjorn Wiinblad was known as the 'designer's designer'. His work is diverse and encompasses studio art pottery, glass, silver, posters and costume design. He was the Rosenthal Porcelain company's chief designer for 35 years but much of his early work was produced by the Danish company Nymolle. We are just starting to collect Wiinblad pieces so pretty much any porcelain/ceramic piece will do as well as the many vintage posters and hand-signed prints, especially the black and white line-drawn type scenes as shown to the left.

In one of the most talked about installations,in Bjorn Wiinblad's The Gossips he has created another whimsical masterpiece. The four smooth bronze sculptures of young ladies obviously in the middle of idle chatter, or just whirling their heads away from it, exudes a swirling motion, a certain arrogance with the figures' noses turned up and away from each other. Please purchase on online www.etabletop.com

Try your hand at a quick and colorful Easter centerpiece decoration for your table setting. Like most of us, we probably have at least two, maybe three glass vases that could easily be turned in to something really beautiful and unique without breaking the bank.

For this Easter craft project you will need the following supplies:

Step 1 - Begin by creating egg shaped forms of the Easter paper grass in your hand. For this project we made six, but it will vary depending on the width and height of your vase. Next, take your Easter paper grass forms that you have made and drop them in to the vase one at a time. This will build height to your project; at least one quarter of the vase should now be full.

Step 2 - Begin layering your artificial eggs, medium then small. Repeat the process.

Step 3 - Place your large ceramic egg on top of the artificial eggs. At this point your vase should be half full. You are now ready to do your final step.

Step 4 - Take your double sided sticker square and apply it to the bottom of your decorative craft bird and press firmly. Next, carefully place your craft bird in to the vase, resting it side ways on to the large ceramic egg with the feathers facing down. When you have completed your project, at least one eighth of the glass vase should be empty at the top of your vase.

You now have a beautiful custom and unique Easter decoration for your table top that your guests are sure to ooh and ah at. Another idea would be to pair your vase with another one facing the other end of your table setting. If you choose to add a second vase, just remember to double your supplies listed above.
